Terms of Service
Last updated: June 2026
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using Mavo Reader ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the Service.
2. Description of Service
Mavo Reader is a language-learning reading platform that lets you import text content, read with word-level knowledge highlighting, look up definitions, and manage vocabulary through spaced repetition. The Service is provided "as is" and is under active development.
3. User Accounts
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. You must provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration and keep your account information updated.
You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service. If you are under 18, you must have a parent or guardian's consent.
4. User Content
You retain ownership of the documents, text, and other content you upload or import to Mavo Reader ("User Content"). Mavo Reader does not claim ownership of your User Content.
You represent and warrant that you have the legal right to upload, import, store, and process any User Content you submit to the Service. You remain solely responsible for your User Content and for complying with applicable copyright and other laws. Uploading or importing content is your decision, and we do not check whether you hold the necessary rights.
By uploading User Content, you grant Mavo Reader a limited license to store and process it solely to provide the Service to you. This processing may include parsing, tokenization, indexing, vocabulary extraction, grammatical analysis, text-to-speech generation, translation, dictionary lookups, caching, and other processing required to operate the features you use. We do not use your User Content for any purpose other than providing the Service to you.
User Content is private by default. It is not made publicly available or shared with other users unless we explicitly introduce such functionality in the future and you choose to use it.
To provide the Service we generate technical metadata and derived information from your User Content — such as vocabulary indices, tokenization results, reading progress, knowledge states, and lookup caches. This derived data remains associated with your account and is used solely to provide the Service.
We do not use your User Content to train machine-learning models.
You must not upload, import, or store content that:
- You do not have the legal right to upload, or that infringes anyone's intellectual property rights
- Facilitates copyright infringement or the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted works
- Contains malware, viruses, or harmful code
- Violates any applicable law or regulation
- Is abusive, harassing, or otherwise objectionable
5. Acceptable Use
You agree not to misuse the Service. In particular, you must not:
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the Service, except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by law
- Access the Service through automated means (such as scrapers or bots) except where we expressly permit it
- Circumvent usage limits, quotas, or access controls
- Create accounts by automated means, or share your account credentials with others
- Interfere with, overload, or disrupt the Service or the servers and networks that run it
- Use the Service to build a competing product by systematically extracting its content or data
6. Copyright and Takedown Requests
If you believe content stored through the Service infringes your copyright or other intellectual property rights, please contact legal@mavoreader.com with enough information to identify the allegedly infringing material and your rights in it. We reserve the right to remove or disable access to User Content where required by law or where we reasonably believe these Terms have been violated.
7. Intellectual Property
The Mavo Reader platform, including its code, design, and branding, is proprietary. The name and logo are protected under applicable laws even while formal trademark registration is pending. You may not copy, redistribute, or repurpose the platform itself, nor use the Mavo Reader name or branding in a way that implies affiliation or endorsement without our permission. Nothing in these terms restricts your right to use the Service as intended.
8. Third-Party Content and Services
Mavo Reader integrates with third-party services, including public-domain book collections (such as Project Gutenberg), Wiktionary and other dictionary sources, our payment processor (Stripe), and our transactional email provider. Mavo Reader is not responsible for the content, accuracy, or availability of third-party sources.
9. Free and Paid Tiers
Mavo Reader offers a free tier with usage limits and paid tiers with expanded limits and additional features. Paid subscriptions are billed through Stripe on a recurring basis until cancelled. We reserve the right to adjust pricing and feature availability with reasonable notice. Except where required by law, fees already paid are non-refundable for partial billing periods.
10. Cancellation and Termination
You may cancel your subscription or delete your account at any time from the Settings page. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or engage in abusive behavior.
When you delete your account, we delete your User Content and associated data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law or is necessary for backup, security, fraud prevention, or the resolution of disputes. Residual copies may persist in encrypted backups for a limited time before being overwritten.
11. Disclaimer of Warranties
The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. Mavo Reader makes no warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy of dictionary content, or uninterrupted access.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Mavo Reader shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including data loss or inability to access the Service.
13. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. We will notify users of material changes via email or in-app notice. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
14. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of Austria, without regard to conflict of law principles. If you are a consumer, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence.
